EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES FROM AROUND THE WORLD
Shadow Puppet Day
see details below or download printable version

The workshop can be used as part of an Arts/Multicultural Week or stand alone to support the design technology, science, literacy, R.E. and art curriculum.

The ancient folk art of shadow puppetry is still found in many countries including Greece, Turkey, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.

Long before the age of television, video games and cinema, adults and children all over the world have been fascinated by this magical form of entertainment.

This full day workshop focuses on three different traditions:

•  Greek Karagiozis, allowing the children to retell Greek myths and legends.

•  Thai Nang Thalang, bringing shadow puppetry right into the 21st century by performing comical sketches of modern day life.

•  Indian Shadow Puppets, which are used to retell the epic Hindu stories of The Ramayana.

09:10 - 09:35 Whole School Assembly

The assembly will open with a recording of traditional Thai gamalan music.

Every child will see the process of making a Thai shadow puppet using photographs on the OHP of Suchart Subsin, a master shadow puppet carver.

09:45 - 10:50 Workshop 1 - Greek Karagiozis
(Up to 35 Key Stage 2 children)

NB It is very useful for the children to be familiar with Greek myths in advance of this session. Please make your school collection of books on Greek Myths available in the classroom on the day of the workshop.

10:55 - 12:00 Workshop 2 - Thai Nang Thalang
(Up to 35 Key Stage 1 or 2 children)

In these two workshops each child will make their own shadow puppets and will then have the opportunity to use them in our shadow puppet theatre.

We will need two adults (one must be a teacher) to assist the children during these morning workshops.

13:05 - 14:10 Indian Shadow Puppet Workshop 3
(Up to 35 Key Stage 1 or 2 children)

14:15 - 15:20 Indian Shadow Puppet Workshop 4

In these two sessions our focus will be the retelling of the Epic Ramayana. Each child will make their own shadow puppet and will then have the opportunity to use them in the shadow puppet theatre.

We will need two adults (one must be a teacher) to assist the children during these afternoon workshops.

NB We will be happy to advise you as to how you can make your own shadow puppet theatre using materials that are readily available in all schools.
