This full day workshop enables the children in Key Stage 2 to develop an understanding of Muslim communities in Britain and around the world. It helps to redress the negative images of Islam that are often portrayed in the media. It balances serious content with the fascinating Muslim crafts of block printing and tie and dye.
Our Muslim Day will support the teachers in making this area of the R.E. Curriculum relevant and exciting to today's children.

09:05 - 09:50 'A Visit to a Mosque' Assembly - Whole School
This assembly will transport your whole school to a mosque and in doing so will offer the children a positive view of the fascinating culture and faith of Islam.
The assembly will open with sacred music and the call to prayer. The children will see photographs on the OHP of the architectural features of the inside and the outside of a mosque. We will demonstrate the ritual washing followed by the eight movements of prayer. The session will end with a teacher and a group of children dressing up in appropriate Muslim clothing.
10:00 - 11:00 Muslim Workshop 1
(Up to 35 Key Stage 2 children)
11:00 - 12:00 Muslim Workshop 2
(Up to 35 Key Stage 2 children)
The two morning workshops each consist of three activities that develop the themes that are introduced during the assembly.
Activity 1
Every child:
Wears either a Muslim skull cap (boys) or headdress (girls);
Acts out the process of ritual washing;
Uses a qiblah compass to find the direction of Makkah from their class room;
Is taught the actions used during prayer.
Activity 2
Block printing (paint on paper) a popular Muslim craft in India today.
Activity 3
Each child will be given artefacts that enable them to design their own Islamic clock, wall hanging, prayer mat or Makkah sign.
NB Children will not be involved in any form of worship.
We will need one teacher to assist the children during these morning workshops.
13:05 - 14:05 Tie and Dye Workshop 1
(Up to 35 children from Year 2 upwards)
14:10 - 15:10 Tie and Dye Workshop 2
(Up to 35 children from Year 2 upwards)
These workshops are best set up in one art area, with a deep sink, for all the groups of children. The colourful craft of tie and dye originated in India and continues to be practised by members of the Muslim community. During each afternoon workshop Andrea will take ten children at a time, from the class, to the designated art area. Each group will be taught a different tie and dye technique and every child will go on to tie and dye their own piece of fabric using three or four bright contrasting colours.
We will need two teachers for these afternoon sessions, one to assist the children during the workshops, the other to remain with the children in their class.
NB We use PERMANENT dyes therefore protective clothing and gloves are essential.
You may like to consider asking a parent (with sewing machine skills) to sew each square together to make a beautiful wall hanging.
Additional Workshops (optional)
Many schools take up our offer of borrowing the resources used in the morning workshops to run two additional workshops in the afternoon. These workshops will be led by your staff who have learned the skills during the morning sessions.
13:05 - 14:05 Muslim Workshop 3 (Up to 35 children led by school staff)
14:10 - 15:10 Muslim Workshop 4 (Up to 35 children led by school staff)
